Animation legend John Musker visited the PennWest Edinboro campus as a guest artist this weekend. For over four decades, Musker has been a key creative within the Walt Disney Company, co-directing films such as The Great Mouse Detective, The Little Mermaid, Hercules, Aladdin, The Princess & and Frog, and Moana.

On Friday, Musker held an exclusive master class and presentation for art students in Doucette Hall 119. The presentation recalled Musker’s education at the famed California Institute of the Arts (aka “CalArts”) and his long career at Disney Feature Animation. He discussed working with directing partner Ron Clements, Eric Goldberg, and Robin Williams, among other industry luminaries. He shared behind the scenes videos of pre-production work for several animated features.

Saturday, Musker screened his latest short film, I’m Hip, at the Louis C. Cole Auditorium’s Memorial Hall. His movie was one of fifteen shortlisted for Best Animated Short Film at the 96th Academy Awards. The picture stars a self-absorbed cat, in a jazzy song and dance, who proudly and comically proclaims his “hipness” to the world. Although, the world is less convinced than he is. During the screening, Musker discussed his workflow process and experience with artists who helped bring the picture to life. Inspired by jazz album covers from the 1960s, John wanted to bring the energy and illustration style of jazz to life through this picture.

“Our recent visit by renowned Disney legend, John Musker, is what makes our (Animation) Program different than all others.” said Mike Genz, head of Edinboro’s animation program and former Disney employee. “He not only inspired each student he interacted with, but also connected with them for an opportunity of a lifetime.”
