(Meadville, PA – July 19, 2024)
Meadville’s Hatch Hollow is a fine art retail and mixed use coworking space which rotates exhibitions of local art every 6-8 weeks. A Friday happy hour reception from 5-8 pm on July 19 welcomes the work of Edinboro photography student Avery Marshall to the comfortably-appointed gallery at 245 Chestnut Street.
Among several themes, Marshall’s work showcases pet portraiture. Dogs and reptiles appear repeatedly, but they’re treated with far more care than might be expected of the usual family snap shot. Sometimes augmenting her subjects with props and costume elements, Marshall balances whimsical content with dignity of form. Lighting, composition, and depth of field, mimic imposing depictions of industrial leaders and holders of public office. Gallery visitors can readily imagine the patience working with animals requires, especially while waiting for subjects to make just the right gesture or assume the perfect pose.
Other photos in the collection feature rugged Western landscapes. Marshall’s camera peers through foreground frames of rocky soil and lanky evergreens, ultimately aiming viewer attention to some larger feature like a lake or mountain in a layer beyond. The photographer also offers serial images and multiple exposures that trace the sun and moon through phases of the April eclipse.
“A solo exhibition is a big step in Avery’s career as an artist,” said Photography professor Natasha Kravchenko. “Her exhibition is successful and well-organized. The diversity of her work will resonate with viewers.”
The show presents more than 70 framed images, many of which are for sale. Hatch Hollow is open Monday through Friday, 9 am – 6 pm and Saturday 10 am-4 pm. Marshall’s exhibition concludes August 16.
