(Edinboro, PA – September 6, 2023)
Wednesday morning, Edinboro graduate Pat “Shaggy” Welsh addressed students of ART 3205, Professor Brian Fuller’s Non-Fiction Filmmaking course. An Erie native, Welsh is co-owner of 360 Studios in Austin, Texas. For more than 20 years, 360 Studios has been a full-service production company that specializes in high-quality lifestyle, product, and branded content.
Welsh – who studied here under Professor Dave Weinkauf – talked to a room-filling audience of class members and other interested philmmakers about his company’s production of advertisements, instructional videos, and corporate films – as well as narrative shorts and features.
“Beyond the entertainment industry, there’s another, well-paying world of client-based work,” said Welsh. “The ones who succeed in that, are the ones who do, the ones who work. Got some time on your hands? Make a commercial. Choose a national brand and polish the most creative 30-seconds you can make. Always keep ads like that in your reel.”
Welsh lectured with a hometown affection for Edinboro and its students as well as the authority of experience. He used his studio’s lucrative relationships with the US Air Force, Dell Computers, Hasbro Gaming, and other high-profile clients as examples while discussing hiring directors and cinematographers, negotiating contracts, and managing 6-figure budgets.
