A generous allocation by the College of Education, Arts and Humanities, recently funded the Philm program’s purchase of a dozen EOS Canon R6 cameras. The R6 is a mirrorless camera, valued for improved video quality and an electronic viewfinder which more accurately previews subjects and exposure.
Equipped with full-frame sensors, the Canon R6 will produce images the same size and shape as Hollywood-standard 35mm film – with less digital noise. Because the department’s entire inventory now shares the same RF mount, Philm can develop a single library of interchangeable lenses. The purchase also standardizes batteries and chargers. Perhaps most importantly, a set of identical cameras streamlines instruction. Students can now simply watch and copy a professor, step by step. They’re less likely to be derailed or confused by subtle differences between manufacturers and models.
“We’re not just gear-heads, craving the latest cameras,” assures Philm professor Brian Fuller. “If I don’t have to go tripod to tripod, teaching four different variations for setting an f-stop, more students can shoot more takes in every two-and-half-hour studio class. That’s just smarter skills training.
“The new cameras complement our recent lighting upgrade. We finally retired the Lowel lights. Kept and reconfigured the very best of the Arri instruments. Added seven GVM kits, with another three coming,” Fuller continued. “Again, we’re modernizing for the sake of efficient learning that connects student experience at Edinboro with the working world they’re likely to encounter.”
